Unilag undergraduate granted bail for alleged gang rape. 


A 17 year old student in the University of Lagos, Ugochukwu Daniel, who was accused to have been part of a gang raping of a 17 year old girl, with others still on the run, was on Thursday granted a bail of N500,000 on the verdict of a Magistrate Court in Surulere. 

 Mrs A. Ipanye-Nwachukwu,Chief Magistrate,  who gave the ruling also granted the accused, two sureties in like sum after he pleaded not guilty to the three count charges of conspiracy, rape and sexual harrassment. 

The Chief Magistrate said one of the sureties must be a blood relative while the second surety must be a civil servant not lower than the Grade 14. 

She also said that the sureties must come with evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State government. 

She also directed that a copy of the case file should be duplicated and a copy forwarded to State Director of Public Persecutions for counsel. 

The Persecutor, Sergeant Anthonia Osayande, had made the court known that the crime was commited around January, at High-Rise quarters, Unilag. 

She disclosed tha Daniel had conspired with other people, still on the run to rape a 17 year old girl. 

“Daniel sexually harassed the girl with video clips in order to intimidate her.

“The accused had sexual intercourse with the 17-year-old girl without her consent,’’ she alleged.

The offences violated sections 137, 260 (2), 264 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015 (Revised).

Section 137 hand overs life imprisonment to offenders.

The magistrate moved the case until May 18.
